Nowadays it is common for a person to purchase a calcium supplement or a vitamin D supplement because they are taught that everyone needs more vitamin D and calcium in their diet. It isn’t taught, however, that vitamins and minerals work in synergy with one another and need to have a balanced ratio. Having too much of one can potentially cause a deficiency in another. For example, vitamin D and vitamin F work to bring calcium to various parts of the body. Vitamin D takes calcium from the tissues and puts it in the blood. Conversely vitamin F takes calcium from the blood and brings it to the tissues. If one has too much Vitamin D, either through supplementation or excessive sun exposure, an imbalance in calcium levels is created. Too much calcium is taken from the tissues leaving them deficient. This can result in hives, itching, welts, and to the extreme…even sunstroke. One might ask if this is caused by too much vitamin D or a deficiency in vitamin F, or did one cause the other? It is important for our body to have the proper ratio of vitamins and minerals.
